History of the National Newark Building

The National Newark Building at 744 Broad Street has a rich and powerful history. Built in 1930 by Wilson and John Ely for the National Newark & Essex Banking Company, this 34 story neoclassical masterpiece was one of the country's first skyscrapers and New Jersey's tallest commercial tower.

From its inception, The National Newark Building housed New Jersey's most prestigious legal, political and business firms. Everyone who was anyone had an office in 744. The building was also home to the exclusive 744 Broad Street Club, a private dining club of prominent bankers , attorneys, politicians and businessmen from all over New Jersey. At the brink of a new century, Cogswell Realty Group has turned back the hands of time and restored this treasure as the pride of Newark's Four Corners Historic District.
